Ever since she got pregnant freshman year, Emoni Santiago’s life has been about making the tough decisions—doing what has to be done for her daughter and her abuela. The one place she can let all that go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness.
Even though she dreams of working as a chef after she graduates, Emoni knows that it’s not worth her time to pursue the impossible. Yet despite the rules she thinks she has to play by, once Emoni starts cooking, her only choice is to let her talent break free.

“I feel like I'm being pulled in a hundred different directions and my feet are stuck in cement.”
This was an adorable book about a teenage mom who works extremely hard to work through high school and provide for her daughter. Not to mention, the relationship with her Abuela was amazing.
Emoni is such an incredible role model, and I just loved the way she handled everything going on in her life, even though at times it got extremely over-whelming. Emoni had to grow up when she had her daughter and it nice to see that in the book, that you can't just go live your life like would without a child, your life is no longer just yours.
Everyone in this book was such a support and so kind to Emoni, and none of them looked down on her because she had a daughter and was amazing to see in a YA book.
This cover is everything and I love it, and the book without the dust jacket is gorgeous too.
Overall, I loved this book and I can't wait to see what Acevedo writes next.
